No exaggeration. No hyperbole. No bullshit.
melodic death metal is, hands down, the best genre of music there is. Without it, I'd probably be some depressed fuck jacking off in a corner somewhere. With all of its wonders, there are also some bits of it that make you wonder "WHY, DEITY THAT MAY OR MAY NOT EXIST!? WHY DO YOU PUT SO MANY PROBLEMS IN SOMETHING SO AWESOME!?" And then there are the bits that restore your faith in humanity's musical ability. The ability to pick up a guitar, bass, microphone, or set of drumsticks, and truly kick the shit out of bad music. Enter the world of melodic death metal.
And now, for a journal entry that actually is based around something. A Starfox10 first, y'all.
The Problem With Melodic Death Metal
Old faithful, the titular Melodic Death Metal tag is often applied hastily to any band that combines growling with singing or tosses in a Gothenburg riff for the verse and solos in the middle of a song. Even worse, any band that combines brutality with melody is called Melodeath at the drop of a hat.
FUCK YOU WITH A RAKE! While I have absolutely no issue with
metalcore and actually enjoy it very very much, it irks me to see the tag thrown at bands like
Sonic Syndicate and
Emmure. It really hurts, people. Do the damn research!
The problem with this genre is, it's too easy to get in. If you fuck your local slut behind the bleachers, don't feel so special. You are not the first, nor fifth, nor thirtieth to be there, sonny boy! But there is a certain appeal that comes with committing such an act. Maybe by emulating
In Flames, At The Gates or
Soilwork, if you wanna REALLY be Gothenburg metal, because we all know that countless sidebanged individuals like to pretend they're Swedish when they learn how to play the riffs to
Trigger or
Suicide Nation. It's not that hard to be a Melodic Death Metal band these days. Hell, if I learned how to play those cool "Dugga dun dun dun dan dun diddly-un" riffs, I could be the next Jesper Strömblad! How about that, people? Just add water! Sure, it'll be a bit watered down and the tag will be wrongfully applied, but why not? It's got
death metal influence(not even this is necessary for some bands), and it's melodic! Oh joy!
The Saving Grace
Despite the amount of false tagging and the ability of any band with growls and mid-high tempo songs to officially be called a death metal band, Melodic Death Metal kills. It is epic. The penis of the metal world. A fucking huge, veiny, Peter North deal. This shit draws people in from around the world to get a shot at it. It's got everything quintessentially metal. It's got melody, it's got darkness, it's got its happy moments, it's got brutality, and it's got a variety of people working to make it the best it can be. There's a variety of lyrical themes including relationships, war, astrology, darkness, death, etc. etc. et-fucken-cetera. Despite the overcrowding of the market, there's a little something for everybody. From the war-mongering bellows of
Amon Amarth, the
punk rock "fuck the world" attitude of
Children of Bodom's later material,
Arch Enemy's rousing
Anthems Of Rebellion(hurr hurr namedrop) to the ponderings on space from
In Flames' earlier work, you will be hard-pressed to find a niche that isn't being filled by somebody. And those somebodies happen to be very good at what they're doing.
The Criticism
Nothing is without its detractors, however. Many underground metalheads hare allergic to melody, and shun it as being too commercial. Or if a band decides they want to jump from
grindcore to
death metal to Melodic Death Metal *cough*
Carcass*cough* or from a more raw sound to one that will draw in more fans, it draws accusations of "sell-out". I fucken hate that word, by the way. It's just a cop-out for when you feel like a band no longer makes music that you find enjoyable. So fucking what?
They don't give a flying fuck if you think they sold out, motherfucker.
