destined to be looked back upon as Spoon's 'mature' classic record

The first Spoon tune I heard was Written in Reverse, although I didn't know who it was at the time, as the radio announcer didn't say. It was several months later that I found out, and heard more of their stuff, when they appeared on Austin City Limits. I immediately bought Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, then this album. Now, I've got them all. I'm hooked. I haven't heard something this fresh since Elvis Costello & the Attractions (back in the day).

I agree that this is not their best moment but it's Spoon here - the quality bar is still pretty high.

    Always brilliant.

This just seems so tame compared to how Kill the Moonlight or Sneaks smacks you in the face. Even Gimme Fiction, which seems to have one foot in the pop rock door (where Franz Ferdinand et al were), adds such a spin to the music. Transference just seems kind of straightfaced... not that the result is bad music or anything.

    I Love this album.

this is their most emotionally deep and cosmic album, you know? it might not be my favorite but it is the most mysterious and eerie. i don't know exactly what to think, it comes from above, unlike their past albums (not a bad thing - all their albums are great for their own reasons). "who makes your money" defines this record for me. the whole thing is a conspiracy.

Without meaning to denigrate their previous albums, which are brilliant in their own right, this is the first album they've done that I really want to listen to from start to end. They sound completely assured. Before Destruction at first sounds like a low-key start, but after several listens its power really sneaks up on you. The chorus to Written In Reverse just makes you yearn for a rough larrynx, and Got Nuffin' has Britt actually writing some fairly relatable lyrics. Love this album.

This album is so great, I feel it's a lot deeper than most of their earlier stuff and has a whole lot more replay value. Definitely MY favorite, at least.

i heard alot of people saying this album would be a "sell out" album, mainstream and all that. but i think they went back to their roots further than their original roots - if that even makes sense. this album surprised the hell out of me, i love it! its like they were young kids again making songs in their best friends basement, and its fantastic.

There are more subtleties in this album than anything Spoon has produced to date. It gets deeper and (yes) groovier with each spin. This is on heavy, heavy rotation right now. Sounds like it was made for the warming weather.
