Hungarian-descended artist Sophia Somajo dropped like a bombshell on the Swedish music scene when she released her first EP “Stockholm Calling” in 2007.
Sophia is one of those artists who almost violently defend their own integrity and refuse to be puppet-handled by the industry. She manages the presentation of her product every step of the way. She recorded all of her material herself on a laptop in the privacy of her bedroom. The vocals were recorded with the built- in microphone and the productions and mixes were made using only Garageband, pushing the simple tool to its limits. Through her own recording company Concrete Forest, she directed and produced the music videos for her first singles; and perhaps it is her diversity and the fact that she controls all aspects of her artistry that made the Swedish magazine Rodeo label her “true indie”.
Sophia’s full-length debut “The Laptop Diaries” (2008) invites the listener to a journey through her inner darkness. The record is in the form of a diary translated into audio, where each track represents a real event, with real people that occurred on a specific date. The track “Stepmonster” is a blunt message to her stepmother and on “Warm Blooded Murder” she tells a different story about obsessive love that kills. At first glance she is confidence and attitude in a visual packaging that brings our thoughts to femme fatale-phenomenon Modesty Blaise, but the mystique and the fascination is in the frailty of what lays beneath the surface.
Constantly watching over her shoulder is her ever-present companion The Clown. His role and purpose is diffuse, demon or protector, father figure or lover. He is always near. He is the symbol of the dark and complex, but he is also the force that pushes Sophia forward.Sophia has chosen not to play live gigs since the release of the album to emphasize the anti-social experience that is “The Laptop Diaries”; a time capsule dedicated to the Counter-Strike generation; the loners, the wrist-cutters and the genuine - iPod in a dark bedroom - lyrical interpreters. On the live-televised Swedish music award show Rockbjörnen, a confused audience was met by a crowd of random people; hippies, yuppies and other characters freaking out on the stage, while a video performance played on a background screen. Sophia herself was nowhere to be found; she was at home, painting her fingernails, enjoying her deliberately orchestrated anti-climax in front of the TV. However, every now and then video-clips of Sophia singing live have popped up on Youtube as parts of a random webcam tour. To Sophia herself, this anti-social experiment; the digital meeting face to face, from bedroom to bedroom, is much more intimate than playing in front of a faceless audience.
Sophia has been awarded the Swedish SKAP Scholarship Award for her talents as a producer, composer and lyricist. Her second full-lenght album is to be released in 2010.
