The idea is for a journal for every month listing new albums I listen to and what I think so that when I review the year's music in December, I will have a handy reminder.

* Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Reco'd: Reco of the Week: Stylo

* Broken Bells - Broken Bells Dangermouse and The Shins' James Mercer. Brilliant.

* Groove Armada - Black Light Strange mix of dance, punk and electronica. Really like it. Bryan Ferry and Empire of the Sun's Nick Littlemore also appear.

* The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night post-rock lusciousness. Recorded on the same console as Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti.' QI. Can really hear Cocteau Twins influences in vocals and shimmering sounds.

* A Weather - Everyday Balloons music to fall asleep to

* Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History owe much to Vampire Weekend. Good, modern pop.

* Gonjasufi - A Sufi and A Killer endorsed by Flying Lotus who was then quoted in Pitchfork, much to his delight, I knew this was going to be good. Head-nod psychedelic abstract post-hip-hop that on first listen, has me with a fixed grin on my face. Can't believe these great sounds! And so many! Out next week, streaming in full here:

* Las Grecas - Gipsy Rock one of the tracks sampled in the above album is Las Grecas - Bella Kali, from their 1974 album, to be reissued this year (see article below for Veneno)

* Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me Absolutely beautiful and very Kate Bush. She's toned down the somewhat challenging vocal style she used to do, pulled back on musical ideas too, to produce not something bland but something sublime. All the ideas are still there, but now polished and refined. Every track sparkles.

* Turin Brakes - Outbursts The one where they start to sound like U2 - Will Power and early k.d. lang in the gorgeous The Letting Down. They saved the best for last with the title track- Outbursts. Another good album from the boys from Balham but probably not one of the greats. Good for music to work to that doesn't demand, impose or intrude.

* Clogs - The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton String Quartet combine rock and folk sounds with classical composition on their latest release. (Spinner) By folk, they mean traditional and mediaeval. Unusual, dramatic, thoughtful and dreamy. Features Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond.

* Tunng - ...And Then We Saw Land or And Then We Saw Land. Top track: October. Lovely waltz. Unpromising start and a bit up and down throughout.

* These New Puritans - Hidden Like industrial Massive Attack. Heavy, loud, aggressive and good.

* Peasant - Shady Retreat like a nicer Bon Iver

* The High wire - The Sleep Tape Fuzzy guitars, shoegaze, gorgeous gorgeous indie. 5/5

* The Advisory Circle - Mind How You Go (Revised Edition) Their 2005 album reissued.

* Portico Quartet - Isla (19 Oct 09)

* Absolute Ensemble featuring Joe Zawinul - Absolute Zawinul (don't know how to tag this. Artist name varies here, Amazon, Spotify and We7) Jazz fusion. Goes well back-to-back with Portico Quartet, above.

Soweto - Township Sounds From The Golden Age Of Mbaqangwa Drawing on elements of R&B, gospel, big-band swing and traditional chants, the all-conquering style known as Mbaqangwa forged a joyous combination of dance grooves and boisterous vocals. (Sunday Times). Music from the dance halls of South Africa in the 1960 and 1970s on 45rpms produced for locals only. Local music for local people.
