  • Hip-hop for the soul

    11 maj 2012, 22:07 av photon_man62

Tracks I'd show to someone new to hip-hop just to demonstrate it is not empty, brutal, vulgar, violent; and can be intelligent. Even ethereal.
    (note: no instrumental hip-hop)

    Shing02 - Luv (sic)
    Shing02 - Luv (Sic), Part 2
Nujabes - Think Different (feat. Substantial)
    Kanye West - Jesus Walks

Blackalicious - Make You Feel That Way
    CunninLynguists - Hourglass

Not "for the soul", but exceptional, and might interest potential new listeners:

  • Help Japan Heal With A Free 3/11-Day Single From i-dep and Shing02

    12 mar 2012, 07:01 av Hear-Japan

Yokohama, Japan — March 12th, 2012 — One year ago on Match 11th, Japan was hit with an earthquake that generated a tsunami, devastating the country.

“Fuku” is a song produced by i-dep and featuring the (English) words of Shing02. Together they made a song that explores the feeling of that sudden tragedy and that looks to uplift Japan and help the healing. i-dep and HearJapan are offering it as a free download that also includes a lyric sheet in both English and Japanese.

i-dep is the wildly popular group led by Hiroshi Nakamura. Their music is based in house but crosses over into a diverse range of genres and have cracked the top 5 of the oricon charts in Japan. Shing02 is one of the most respected Japanese hip hop rappers in the underground scene of Japan. Having grown up in both Japan and America, he is able to rap fluently in both languages and has an intense following in both countries.

Check out the free download of “Fuku” now and help spread the uplifting feelings…

I have to post about my latest podcast, because it unites some of my favourite artists + languages. I deliberately avoided English, though there is one track on there, from a Norwegian band... I had to do it. It's a great track and it half-fit the theme.

I want to see how much "language barrier" can affect the attention span/degree of pleasure you get from music.

Japanese is a versatile language for song - it can go horribly wrong or near-perfect. It must be all those open sounds. See Yura-Yura Teikoku, UA, Lullatone, Cappablack and my boy Shing02 for the details.

    28 dec 2007, 07:16 av soulstew

  • Nujabes - Metaphorical Music - 2003
