For those interested, the song refers to these events: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fire_of_Smyrna . If you know the background and understand both the Greek and English parts, the song really gives you goosebumps. It describes the massacre of the Christian - mostly Greek but also Armenian - population of Smyrna by the Turkish army and the desperate attempts of whole families (including elderly, young children and their mothers) to get away from both the massacre and the flames that burned down their city and homes, begging the ships in the port to get them as far away as possible. Many times, the ships just sailed away and left them there..
