As a Carpenters fan of more years than I'll admit, I was definitely expecting something a lot closer to the original arrangements... the electronic sound doesn't do any justice to the original songs :(
As a Carpenters fan of more years than I'll admit, I was definitely expecting something a lot closer to the original arrangements... I guess it's hard to follow the originals without slipping into imitation, so maybe she felt like she had to try something different. Her vocals are great, at least, and Dear Karen is brilliant.
So I've listened to Rie Fu Sings the Carpenters a couple times now and.... I dunno. Don't get me wrong, Dear Karen is fantastic in both languages. It's the type of song I like to see the most from Rie Fu. But the rest of the album is just so strange. First we get five tracks done in these minimalist electronic arrangements that don't suit the Carpenter's style at all. Then we get six tracks done in a much more organic style, which suits the music very well. But at the same time, they're LIVE tracks, which I wasn't expecting at all. It's just so strange!
New album announced (looks like it's gonna be a Rie fu release again?! o.o) "Rie fu Sings The Carpenters" released on Sept 4th! It's going to include cover songs, old live performances of her covers and original songs she wrote inspired by The Carpenters (one song called "Dear Karen")
