Finally! Another band crossed off the bucket list!
Let me tell you that people were very excited to see Menomena on Friday night. Cheering with much excitement after just a couple of notes of pretty much every song in the setlist. The last time they played in NYC was November 10, 2007 - almost three years ago. This also explains why I've never had the chance to see them live before. Argh! The suffering!
The setlist was mostly even between Mines and Friend and Foe, with sadly not more than an encore nod to I Am the Fun Blame Monster! This did not surprise me at all, as I always do my "homework" before gigs and they play the exact same setlist every single night of the tour. I usually have my reservations when it comes to repeating the same thing every night but, when you think about it, makes a lot of sense with self-proclaimed perfectionists. Menomena does not look like a band that leaves room for quick reinterpretations. …
9 mar 2009, 14:56 av mattpateBefore I begin with the review I must confess a failure on my part. As a frequent visitor of Barsuk Records’ website, many times I crossed by Menomena, however, the name never really caught my eye. Two years after the release of the album my wife awoke me from my slumber on our living room couch around 1:30 in the morning, ecstatic about a band called Menomena and an album entitled Friend and Foe. Surprised by my ignorance and lack of knowledge of the band she, made me promise to take her to Waterloo Records, an Austin record store, to purchase the album. My wife’s album collection has been stuck in the sixties and seventies, with few modern artists. Yet, she’s begging for me to take her to buy this album.
From the very beginning of the first track, “Muscle’n Flo,” in which it seems Menomena is channeling Wolf Parade (if only through the use of cymbals), you’re transported back to the hay-day of indie music. Though you are relocated to this past the band makes you eager to look to the…

26 dec 2008, 02:14 av pecusitaIt’s just impossible to get to know what an entire year has to offer in music. There will always be that artist you just got into that happens to have a wide discography, other albums you may become interested in but don’t get them because you feel swamped by all that you are listening at the moment; many factors can contribute to an album getting 'late into the game'.
Last year I made a list of 15 albums and ranked them based on average play count, which it’s a convenient and easy way to get pass the torture of comparison but it’s also unfair to any album released after October. Unless there’s a complete take over of my ears, it’s highly unlikely that any of them could ever make it into a list of that sort.
Taking all of this into consideration, I decided to recognize all the 2007 albums that either got added to my library in the final stretch of said year or were acquired during this year. And also reflect on the list I posted last year, am I still listening to those albums?

"All the soldiers... all the little babies... all the poets... and all the liars... and all you Pretty People... all gonna die!" begins this album, cheerfully enough, over a martial drone. And Low continue to plumb the depths and the dark as they go on, but they do it so gently and so lovingly that they draw you in. Using the imagery of war and some subtle electronic programming, they invite us to explore the rotten places of our own brains. Count me in. "Don't act so innocent, I've seen you pound your fist into the earth" they rage in Murderer, before closing with the beautiful, contradictory epiphany of Violent Past.
9. k-os - Atlantis - Hymns for Disco
He can swerve from old school hip hop to a string drenched soul ballad to something that sounds very much like it's based on a Jailhouse Rock sample, then drop a track as bouncily catchy and irresistible as CatDieseL. He's very lovely indeed.

I found this band last year on last.fm and have been addicted since. This album is so easy to listen to and on high rotation during my work day. Stand-out tracks are Bullets (of course) and Clump (which is the bonus track on the CD, but I love it).
02. Blonde Redhead - 23
This was the first album I was addicted to this year... and I still love it.
03. Spoon- Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
The album I was looking forward to the most this year. Whilst not as good as Gimme Fiction, it is still very cool. Plus I got to see them at Big Day Out which was awesome.
04. Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice
Another artist that I came across from looking at my neighbours playlists. This album rocks.
05. Caribou - Andorra
Melody Day is one of the stand out tracks of the year. This is an incredible album that needs to be listened to as a whole to be fully appreciated.
06. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
31 jan 2008, 08:16 av pitchwickHere are my favorite 50 albums of 2007, or at least what I think are my favorite 50 albums of 2007 at the end of January 08. I listened to...a lot of music this year, mostly thanks to drugs, bouts of insomnia, crazy girls and illegal downloading. This was a monumental year for music, probably the best since 1996. So...if you feel where I'm coming from, or you've stumbled upon my Last.fm because of shared tastes, let me just say that all 50 of these albums were freakin' sweet and I highly recommend them all, I probably could've done a Top 100 this year and said the same thing. Well, here tis...
