27 nov 2010, 17:44 av florianblaschkeMeant as an indication of my current taste (not that it has changed a real lot in the past few years, compare my profile on Pandora). These are all albums that I really, honestly enjoy without having to force myself or anything. I tried to limit the list to a single album per artist, but indicated cases where I found it really hard to decide.
Note that in most cases, I'm not familiar with the artist's entire back catalogue, so I'm probably missing out on a lot of great albums that I'd agree are better than the ones I'm listing here, so I'm far from claiming that those are the artist's best work overall in every case, but I'm confident that every album is a decent representation of the artist's work. Also note that I've left out a few albums that are still too new for me in my opinion to judge whether they belong into a list of all-time favourites. This is part of the reason why this list is slightly biased towards older albums, but not the only reason, as I do find myself preferring the early work of established acts in many cases. …
6 jan 2010, 13:29 av Mark_HWhen rating prog albums I try to do so in a historical context, that is how an album compares against the entire body of Prog. This means that the best album for any given year, which most people would rate with top marks may not receive the same rating in my charts as only the best albums of all time should get the highest ratings... This chart does not include compilations or live albums.
Note: I vote on a bell curve, anything above 6 is really good, anything much below 4 really isn't :D

8 nov 2008, 20:57 av Dan-EternalWIt's coming on Christmas, they're scrobbling their plays...
I've been doing a roundup of Christmas albums to construct a playlist of festive songs that are more attuned to what I like to listen to. I was hoping that some musically informed people could recommend me some more great ones that I haven't heard yet.
Here's what I have so far:
Various Artists - Excelsis: A Dark Noel
Various Artists - Excelsis vol. 2: A Winter's Song
Tarja - Henkäys ikuisuudesta
Allison Crowe - Tidings (probably the best one ever)
Blackmore's Night - Winter Carols
Janet drew - Starlight
The Moody Blues - December
Neil Diamond - The Christmas Album
Jethro Tull - The Jethro Tull Christmas Album
Mostly Autumn - Spirits of Christmas Past
Sarah Brightman - A Winter Symphony
Thanks in advance for all recommendations.
And may you all have a gothic Christmas! LOL.

29 aug 2008, 23:54 av megascargotI have not written a music review in quite a long time, but the events of the past weekend in western Pennsylvania have made me consider coming out of blogging retirement. So there goes my extensive review of the first edition of the Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival (a.k.a 3RP) which was held near Pittsburgh, PA on August 23 and 24, 2008.
August 23-24, 2008 – 3 Rivers Prog (3RP) Festival
While I have attended many prog festivals in California, mostly CalProg down in Whittier, I had never really considered flying out to one of the bigger prog fests on the East coast, like NEARFest or ROSFest. That is, until I heard of 3RP a couple of months ago. Looking at the line-up, I felt an immediate urge to reach for my credit card and book plane tickets, hotel room and VIP tickets to the show.
And the line-up was definitely impressive for any fans of Spock's Beard like myself: not only would SB get a two-hour co-headlining slot on the first day of the show, they would be immediately be followed by Neal Morse…
17 aug 2008, 16:41 av ArchaeopterIxThis list contains all artists that I have seen live (obviously ;) )
Formerly, I used to simply tag an artist as 'seen live'... But now in the new last.fm everything you have tagged is automatically in your library. Normally there is nothing wrong with that, but I have seen some artists live, but never scrobbled them to my profile. (And I probably won't ever do that) So there are some artists within my library with 0 plays and I don't like that! :D So here we go...
The Rolling Stones
Wishbone Ash ( 2 x )
Anathema ( 2 x )
Porcupine Tree ( 5 x )
Uli Jon Roth
The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band
Riverside ( 4 x )
The Musical Box
Fish ( 4 x )
Sylvan ( 3 x )
Steve Thorne & Gary Chandler
Pendragon ( 2 x )
Mastodon ( 2 x )
Tool ( 2 x )

10 maj 2008, 17:27 av The_ThomasAs I once said: everyone knows Avantasia and Ayreon, many knows Aina, but no one knows Genius. This is the place to talk about that definitely interesting project.
Well, who listened to Avantasia knows that this is only concept album (Tobias Sammet admit it too) with a lot of guest musicians. Opera is only part of name. Plot is only something to keep it running.
Daniele Liverani's Genius is different. Lyrics are based on dialogs between characters. Author wanted to make it as close to 'normal' opera as it is possible. There is things like arias, recitatives, choirs, castratos (:D, ya know, sometimes power metal vocals sounds a little 'girlish' :P) and others. I'm not the one who can talk about operas. I wrote this journal only to enlighten a little last.fm people. :P
Story is simple (but better than Aina...). It's about boy Genius (on first two CD's pictured by Mark Boals [Yngwie J. Malmsteen], on last one by Dc Cooper [Royal Hunt, Silent Force]) who by mistake entered world of dreams and messed it a lot. …
