Almost more interesting to me than the new KAT-TUN releases are the fans' reactions to them. Commonly voiced complaints: It's so low budget! Nothing but camwhoring! All I see is Jin and Kame! I take your point, KAT-TUN fans! KAT-TUN never release PVs full of KA camwhoring in poorly lit warehouses! Wait--sorry, KAT-TUN.

The other major issue seems to be "I hate the auto-tune. Can't we go back to their old sound?" Which: fair enough, fandom. Fair enough. But you must not like k-pop. I'm also a little baffled by the girl who invoked the upbeat days of RESCUE. I guess if you don't want to cry alone...?

On the whole, I think I rather like this single. I wasn't very sold on Love yourself ～君が嫌いな君が好き～ on first hearing, but the more I see of YamaNade the more I enjoy it. Yes, Kame's jacket is rather a travesty, and I might hate Ueda's fluffy coat were he not so adorable (Koki, for instance, does not get this pass for his mismatched hat and sweatshirt.) But Kame's still fairly pretty, and I like Jin's hair if not his glasses, and I actually don't mind the auto-tune on either of them. And I really like both the lyrics of the song and the instrumental version used for YamaNade as fitted to the show, so, okay, KAT-TUN. No complaints about your giant garnet heart from me.

It does amuse me to no end that Love yourself's been fielding all the low-budget accusations. Have you seen THE D-MOTION, guys? Are we actually watching the same PVs? (And if you do live in an alternate world where KAT-TUN get props and Ueda gets screentime, can you share the video?) But I like k-pop, I'm guilty fond of shallow dance music, and D-Motion is admittedly fun. A little sketchier on the auto-tune here: Nakamaru's been tuned out of recognition, and it's certainly not doing Koki any favors either. (Tangentially, his cheekbones--have they always looked like that? Is that healthy?) And I can't argue: Kame is exceptionally camwhorish here. But Ueda's one significant line is kind of awesome, and I also kind of love Jin singing behind Koki. Really not sure why.

Lol @ Jin's cigarette: keep that up and they'll have to auto-tune you, baby.

Oh, you know who does look great, though! Nakamaru! He's totally rocking the five seconds before Kame reasserts his diva self. (Further lols at all the hair-flipping. I still love you, babe, it doesn't bother me, but I feel like you're just unhappy Tego owned that drag contest. Maybe if you had more than the one come-hither face?)

Junno doesn't sound like himself either, and it might even be a stretch to say he sounds like a human being. But here I actually love the glasses. Can we get some playboy Junno scandal to go with all the slutty Jin? Because I would be all over that.

Kame was doing better with the auto-tune in Love yourself. He actually sounds a bit chipmunk-ish here...? And I'm still not convinced Jin needs it--but you know what, it's catchy. And I can't say I couldn't see this coming. It started with LOVEJUICE, y'all, and you ate that up, ditto Pi's MOLA: this is just the logical conclusion. I will take it over White X'mas every damn day of the week.

A PAGE is actually very much in the MOLA vein, and I'm also getting Wonder vibes, although I don't like it as much. I feel like Jin has this great potential he's not really using; you could hear it in Helpless Night, which was gorgeous, but his own solos don't tend to show it. A PAGE isn't too bad, and it may grow on me later, but at the moment it's just not too remarkable.

Jin is, however, still doing better than Kame. Credit where it's due: 愛している is pretty good as Kame solos go. someday for somebody has no competition, but it may be the best of the lot otherwise. This may be personal bias: I'm no dai-fan of ballads, I don't think he has the voice for them, and I wasn't even very sold on 絆. But my outstanding impression here is--is it over yet? And at almost six minutes, the answer is generally no, not really.

I do love HEART BEAT! I've heard some comments that it sounds like an 嵐 song, which--yes, rather. Sometimes KAT-TUN do sound like Arashi. (Hi there, 「un-」!) But it sounds like an Arashi song I really like. And it's really a breath of fresh air among all the auto-tune: everyone sounds wonderful, Kame included; Jin sounds more like the way I know he can sound; and I can actually hear people not Jin or Kame singing. (I am kind of in love with Ueda. This is not exactly news, but I feel it bears repeating.) In fact, my only complaint about HEART BEAT is that it's not the A-side. Sometimes you just need light, uplifting pop--even from KAT-TUN.
