It is the mid 70s. I am sitting in Mr James' Biology class. My friend, Chris is sitting next to me admiring his new purchases under the desk. They are two LPs. One by Spyro Gyra, does not interest me. The other is Cream's magnificent Disraeli Gears. Several of the tracks from that album scrobble to the career retrospective:

Of course, I am being as perverse as last.fm's album attribution: neither of my chosen videos is actually on the featured album ;)

Eric was inspired to take up guitar by the great 1930s blues man Robert Johnson. He was not alone in this inspiration; he inspired many of the British guitarists who broke in the 60s. However none of the others could match their hero. Even Keith Richards admitted he needed the help of a second guitarist to reproduce Johnson's guitar sound.

One would be hard pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground and Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting For The Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. …

It's now the time of the year when I write a new journal where I go through and try to analyse what have happened (musically) in my life over the last twelve months. To go straight to the point, there haven't happened that much musically this year. There were some new bands as predicted but not only Them Crooked Vultures like my latest journal mentioned and my charts didn't stagnate as predicted either. Well, at least not if you look beyond the top 50 artists on my charts...

I travelled to Austria the same week as I wrote last year's journal and it's that five months long stay that is fresh on my mind rather than what music that I listened to during that time. Yes, I very reluctantly admit that I know the lyrics to Das geht ab by heart but for the rest it's more or less the same as it was before I left.

I saw Lee Davison Trio in the jazz club Republika in Prague, experienced classical music at the beach of Donau, not the mention a handful of Austrian and German bands whose names I have sadly forgotten. …
