My top 50 songs of 2010. I took into account some how many songs there were per artist but mostly only during toss ups when I didn't know what songs to put in. As usual I spend like no time on the writes, half the time I don't have anything to say, and most of the time they are retarded.


50. Daft Punk - The Game Has Changed
Epic and ridiculous track off of Daft Punk's slight but entertaining soundtrack. TRON: Legacy isn't really the next Daft Punk album but it's really fun to listen to and this song serves has a pretty good example of that.

49. Girl Talk - Jump on Stage
I think Girl Talk stands above other mash up artists in that he doesn't just make mash ups that "sound cool" but creates musical moments that just hit you in the way the great parts of proper songs do. The I Wish I Was A Balla chorus with whatever he mashes it up with in that song is an example of that for me. …

Wed 8 Sep – Janelle Monáe, Wolf Gang

Am breaking mine own self-imposed conventions regarding journalizing for 2010 here, because more than a few things contributed to a most lovely day today. Firstly, the weather proved rather serendipitous with regards to my music listening at work, my first listen of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's seminal album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven being accompanied by the kind of gorgeous muggy brown-grey sky and torrential rain that no epic-drone album can do without. However, such beauteousness was to be subsumed when the downpour finally ceased and the sun burst through the clouds just in time for my playlist devoted to one Miss Janelle Monáe, whose gig at KOKO in Camden I'd previously arranged to see with two of my good last.fm friends (they know who they are... ;^]) I'd been following Monáe's progress from diminutive OutKast protégé to fledgling pop star for more than a couple of years now…

Janelle Monáe – The ArchAndroid

I first encountered Janelle Monáe when I was looking at who was up for awards in the 2009 GRAMMYs ceremony. Hearing that Chrisette Michele was up for an award, I checked to see in which field and there up against her was Janelle Monáe – so I researched her music and came across ‘Many Moons’. I fell in love with her in the first listen, and kept falling further in love with her with every single repeated listen. After years of waiting I finally obtained her first studio album, ‘The ArchAndroid’; after being teased by snippets and singles (‘Come Alive (The War Of The Roses)’, ‘Tightrope’ and ‘Cold War’). Usually, when albums contain as many songs as ‘The ArchAndroid’ does it’s usually a sign of quantity over quality; thankfully not in Janelle Monáe’s case.

So, the first song on the album is ‘Dance or Die’ (leaving the Overtures until later), in which Janelle Monáe shows us her vocal versatility and dexterity…
