2009 was a pretty weak year for my subsubsubgenre of music. If it wasn't for a certain gentleman from Canada, I'd call it a shit year. But you always have shit years.

So here's stuff from 2009 that wasn't shit, in no particular order:

Riverside- ADHD

I didn't like their second and third albums very much. Bit boring, bit too slow, bit too self-indulgent with the big atmospheric buildups and what-not. This is good again. It's not as much of a "wow what is this amazing new music" moment as their first was, but then again they're not exactly new anymore. Them Polish boys know what they want from their music, and they've found their ways of making their music do just what they want. Don't think I've listened to it too many times this year, but I always liked it when I did.


Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing-Along Songs for the Damned and the Delirious

I was surprisingly much in love with this thing. Still am, when I listen to it from time to time. Great walking around town music, great moments of circus-inspired madness, and great advice in the lyrics! Not very prog, the whole thing, but very enjoyable.


Madder Mortem - Eight Ways

Yeah, without a doubt the best female singing this year (maybe aside from Anneke's stuff on Addicted--q.v.). Their music is still not much to write home about, but while I liked the album mostly based on her singing up until the middle point, the music itself also really grabbed me on Where Dream and Day Collide, and the album just kind of grew out of that song to the point where I really like all of it now.


Darzamat - Solfernus' Path

And here's how not to do female vocals! Nah, it's not that bad. It's an enjoyable album. Any other year, it wouldn't have ended up on my list, but this is truly a year for the devil to eat flies.


Katatonia - Night Is The New Day

Yep, it's Katatonia. They still sound like Katatonia. They are still awesome. Nothing to see here, move along.


Mastodon - Crack The Skye

One of the bigger surprises of the year--Mastodon have completely changed their sound, and god what a gorgeous album they've made. Even some of my mainstream friends have started listening to this, which is astonishing. Wonderful atmospheric album.


Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

This is probably my number 3, if you need a top 3. It's all because of the moon. Swim to the Moon is without a doubt my song of the year. So very addictive, great, epic, sprawling, adjective! The rest of the album isn't as good as Colours, but it's still very good. But man, Swim to the Moon! What a song!


Animals as Leaders - s/t

Yep, very good and fast instrumental prog metal. Solid album, great sound, melodies that don't quite let you go. I approve.


Devin Townsend - Ki

Number one album of the year. Took me some deliberation to get there, but yes, this is it. Which is weird, because if anything I'd always preferred SYL over Townsend's other efforts, and this is so far away from SYL you can't even see SYL from there due to the curvature of the earth. This is the most meditative, inspired, addictive album of the year, and because there is this insanely good backdrop of relaxed, subdued music, the two or three moments of raw anger welling up are so much more powerful. Well done, gentleman from Canada, well done.

(Even though last.fm may not reflect it, this is also my most listened-to album of the year. I had it on my mp3 player for a few months after it came out and I just couldn't listen to anything else.)


Devin Townsend - Addicted

Where could he go from Ki? He could go here. My number two album of the year. Whereas Ki was almost pure relaxation, this is almost pure anger, and yet in many ways it's calmer. Probably because it sticks to one level of emotion? It's a rolling, stomping, crushing robot camel of sound, and yet it has Anneke's best work in a long time on it (that Hyperdrive cover? Wow.) To use Anneke as a singer is kind of a no-brainer. She's in a league of her own, no matter what weaksauce her Agua de Annique project ("Pure Air" was only saved from the shitturd of the year award by Messrs. LaBrie & Portnoy & company) might put out from time to time. But to cast Anneke in your rolling, stomping, crushing robot camel of an album when you also had a slow, meditative one out earlier the same year? Yeah, that's genius. Counterpoints, I tells ya. The rock/soul singer on Ki was just fucking perfect for what he was doing with that album, and Anneke CROWNS Addicted.


Freak Kitchen - Land of the Freaks

This is Freak Kitchen? Wow, they went over to the dark side of enjoyable quirky shredding quasiprog! Land of the Freaks is harder, heavier, darker, and yet more addictive than anything else they've put out before. Be! Be my! Be my mur! And so on. Lots of delicious wtf moments on this one, and yeah, that murder groupie song. Once you've got it in your head, it just won't leave, like a hookworm of the brain, but one that! that builds! that builds its! that builds its cho! that builds its chorus! that builds its chorus bit! that builds it chorus bit by! that builds its chorus bit by bit!

Fellsilent - The Hidden Words

Once more, thanks to the magical Persetti for pointing me to things I end up loving. This is one of those things. Rougher and with worse sound than Textures/Gojira, but with just as much polyrhythmical goodness and aggression. Good stuff!



Shitturd of the year award

Dream Theater - Brown Clouds and Yellow Linings
Or something like that. It's an album that starts with a decent song (filler material, surely, were these still Metropolis pt. 2 times), building your hopes, making you more likely to sit through the rest of this, well, shitturd. SOOOO IIIII WIIIITHER! Yeah, wither faster, fucker.

Indukti - Idmen

What do you mean this isn't Sleepytime Gorilla Museum! But... but... okay so the singer is VERY characteristic and he brings a LOT of SGM goodness with him, but yes, this is a very different band at times. Just that that song about the crazy field mouse who wants to go and kill a chicken hawk is so very very good and so very very SGM. Hawk kills chickens! Hawk kills rabbits! But the hawk won't kill Tusan Homichi Tuvota

Exivious - s/t

Textures + Cynic! What's not to like? I don't know, but at first I didn't quite like this. It's... in between everything, but if you give it a chance to grow on you, it will. To paraphrase someone somewhere, don't expect lounge jazz and don't expect mad polyrhythmical techdeath, but do expect everything in between. With a heavy bias on the lounge jazz.

Nile - Those Whom the Gods Detest

Not expecting much here. Nile is one of those "oh look we are lower/faster/brutalerer than you so our penises must be much longer" bands. They had their moments, but it's too mainstream death for me. Still, better make sure I'm not missing anything.


Amorphis - Skyforger

Always hated Amorphis. Not sure why I'd expect that to change. Still, better safe than sorry.


Scar Symmetry - Dark Matter Dimensions

These guys once lived in the part of my brain marked "shiny polished melodic cyber metal", along with their good friends Sybreed and a few others I'm forgetting now. That place has shrunk in the meantime; I just don't listen to that ultra-slick stuff so much anymore. Still, I used to like them, might give this one a chance. Maybe it'll make me wanna dance.


Isis - Wavering Radiant

Isis is one of those weird bands. One of their albums totally parasitized my brain for a while (Panopticon). It had this weird symbiosis going on with Ellipsis and their album From Beyond Thematics. I had these two albums on exclusive rotation for a long time when they came out. Every Isis or Ellipsis album after those two somehow did nothing for me. Maybe the bands need to synchronize their release schedules? For me? ;P

От Уилсона я такого не ожидал. Вроде все то, все сделано по-уилсоновски, но конечный результат удручает, ему не хватает четкости и цельности.

Ну а теперь переходим к приятному, начнем с открытий.
Если в прошлом году для меня открытием стала японская метал-сцена, а в этом французская. Если раньше французские коллективы представлялись мне в лучшем случае экзотикой, то теперь я увидел весь потенциал и силу французской метал-сцены. Тут и гарные хэви-металисты Nightmare, сочетающие техничность и красоту дэтстеры Carcariass, и романтичные живописцы Amesoeurs. На самом деле я множество хороших групп в этом году открыл. Поэтому перейдем пожалуй к дебютам.

В этом году можно было заметить значительное оживление в данном направлении. Конечно старая гвардия играла тут немаловажную роль, но и молодежь неподкачала

Старый масто... так стоп это уже было. Тем более тут уже не Мастодонты, а Динозавры, чьи имена вплавлены в историю мировой музыки. Они еще раз доказывают свое мастерство, хотя доказывать не надо и вообще пора уже на пенсию.

Пожалуй, это был один из самых ожидаемых релизов года и все вложенные ожидания он оправдал. Хорошо, что Эпика чуть изменила направление в сторону симфопавера, хотя Какко я заменил бы на кого-нибудь из более тяжелых и мрачных стилей.

Вообще, чем брутальнее стиль тем хуже я его воспринимаю. Начинаю засыпать (эксперементально было подтверждено что в пяти случаях из пять я не просыпаюсь от BOLT THROWER, зато спокойно от Дио). Но технодет все-таки заставляет себя слушать.

Митолкор, конечно, никогда не был "моим" стилем, видимо, потому что там где иные находят драйв,я нахожу неплохую колыбельную. Но все ж таки несколько любимых групп у меня точно есть.

На мой взгляд, по атмосферности данный альбом даст фору иным митол-альбомам с клавишами

Like other years, this has been the best music's year according with my eclectic taste. It's clear that all the people have not classified the list like here show.
2009 I'll remember like a amazing music year. With expected comebacks and others surprises.
Other main note is I've decided listen 'always bands' that other new bands. Discover new bands are welcome but this year I've prefer other method.
This list contains around 65 releases from this year that I've listening during 2009. I would like listen all releases more times. Sometimes feel that this list
