Actually, this is the second original version (side three, track 4) which was originally on the 1960 vinyl "Wilson, Keppel and Betty Sing Gerswhin"

This IS the original version from the debut album. The version on Works Vol 1 has orchestral strings amongst others. This track is just the three of them. And it still kicks ass.

Upon listening to this further, I belive that this is neither the Original album or the version on Works. I have not heard this iteration previously.

I loved watching this drum solo live, the lights shone down perfectly on Carl Palmer's gongs, reflecting the light. ..... whilst his drum kit revolved round....!! It was really something to see I can tell you.... the audience went wild after his solo I can tell you !!!! "Tank" is really something else. Yet another masterpiece....... I love it XxxxX . Ah, yes, the Carl Palmer side of Works Volume I. Some barely audible percussion work from Carl, and a four-minute-long synthesizer solo from Keith Emerson. Fantastic.

A lot of great art, literature, film and music is dated. 'Dated' only means that you can tell the era from which it came. ELP was one of the greatest progressive rock bands that ever existed, and this song is among their finest.

Actually, I think that you meant to say Works, Vol. 1. Unless they performed this on both Works 1 and 11. But to me it sounds much better than the version from my copy of Works as they don't do the reverb thing on works Vol. 1 and I remember that being a souped up jazz rendition. I don't think that they performed this on Welcome Back My Friends as it doesn't appear to be live. Sure sounds like the original to me but some research needs to be done to confirm this. Also last.fm may have switched versions and these postings may not necessarily apply to the same version. Pardon the long winded theory. But that's how I hear it. Still the best intermediate length instrumental of the progressive rock era.

Sorry folks, this is from Works, Vol. II, not the debut album. There were no soprano sax solos on the debut album, and there was no 88 piece orchestra either...... This was my first "rock 'n Roll concert in 1977
