No one's being a hipster. It does get annoying when people think MBV are the end-all be-all shoegaze band, and base their acceptance of every other sg band based solely off arbitrary comparisons to MBV.
While I am a big fan of MBV throughout their evolution (except for that very, very boring Post-Punk album they did with only one good song!), I do think Loveless (certainly in this day and age) is referenced way too frequently. Hell, MBV itself begins and ends with Loveless for a lot of people, and that sucks because their older stuff's good too. I have only listened to one Beach House album, so I cannot really comment, but it was pretty unremarkable from what I can remember about it. Not bad, but also not very moving or memorable. Anyway, yeah, DJ is the shiz-briz, and they always will be. I will know that I have officially lost all that remains of my soul the day I decide I'm tired of listening to Huremics.
Whenever I meet someone who's allegedly into dream pop/shoegaze, I immediately mention Dif Juz. I've received many puzzled looks thus far, no doubt because they assume the style begins and ends with MBV and Beach House. Fuck that overhyped shit. Doesn't hold a goddamn candle to DJ.
Yep, that is exactly why... it's just weird to me that they weren't more popular in general, especially considering people like Lisa Gerard can release painfully banal, overproduced "Neo-Classical" snoozefests like The Mirror Pool, and people eat it up... Seems like DJ are just one of the 4AD bands that everyone forgot, but I still don't really know why. No justice, dammit!
