    • Boris @ Sacred Trinity Church, Manchester (26 June 2007)

      27 jun 2007, 12:09 av awesome_wells

      Tue 26 Jun – BORIS
Tonight's gig - Japanese rockers Boris playing in a small church in Manchester.

Very unusual gig! Well, unusual compared with most other concerts I guess; I have heard of, and seen, church gigs before, this wasn't unique by a long shot. But it was still very interesting watching a band like Boris playing in such a tiny venue. After all, they play at Festivals for thousands of people at one time, so a small venue of just over 100 people is a bit like a break from the norm.

The show was good, nice enough venue, as far as churches go this one seemed quite liberal. A liberal church! You heard it here first. There's a strange piece of artwork on the wall in there of what appears to be a vampire biting a girl's neck, a big old piece of canvas art with fangs and blood and all that. In a church. Underneath it there's a small quote from the bible, something about wives honouring their husbands, next to it was a £250 price tag to buy the artwork. …

    • Crippled Black Phoenix/Firebird Live In Manchester.

      24 okt 2006, 21:21 av mat35

Where to start… Where to start… Well I met Bill Steer (Carcass, Firebird, Napalm Death) twice!!! :) :) \m/ \m/ :) :) First time he came up to me asking for directions to the actual performance area, but it was the first time I myself had been there… So I was “fuck, sorry, I don’t myself” … And basically made a tit out of myself and the second time was when I was leaving the venue and got to tell him what a great performance Firebird did, apologise for being stupid when he asked for directions… and got a photo on my phone.

      http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b182/mat35/DSC01227.jpg

Anyway… to music! After another massive delay, the first band on were Day for Airstrikes… Who despite sound problems were pretty good… Reminded me more of Salvation era Cult of Luna at one point, then some totally different Post-Rock the next, and again more random different(ish) sounding Post-Rock… Every member minus the drummer was switching instruments which was pretty fun/strange. …

    • UK Indepedent Labels

      8 jun 2006, 21:07 av themonkeymafia1

It seems so hard nowadays just to go into a record shop and find the piece of vinal or CD that I am looking for. I see so many record stores that are just filling up wih more and more rubbish and charging extortonate amounts for anything that is worth buying.
Online shops maybe cheaper but still can have the problem of lack of content.
So for the last 3-4 years I have been buying more and more dirctly from Independent Labels websites. I thought I would make a list of all the good UK Indepedent Lables so people can go support them and maybe do the same.

    • Don't Stop Me Now

      1 maj 2006, 10:35 av Mr_Fran

Good morning folks! Tis the day after the night before, my mouth tastes very lagery and I spent the majority of the early hours trying to hijack a taxi in town (damn bank holidays), but all is fine and well. Last Thursday I witnessed the mighty Primal Scream at the Ritz which was really fun, the new songs sound top and the crowd was well up for it - I think 'Riot City Blues' could well put 'Give Out But Dont...' to rest, rectifying the mistakes made back in 94. I was meant to be going to The KBC after it, but I was a little rocked out (sorry). Still, I knew I would be seeing them again at 'Sounds From The Other City' yesterday. The day started for me watching Day for Airstrikes at the Mark Addy and it does seem they have improved on their post-rock soundscapes. A bit later it was a surprise Liam Frost appearence at the same venue - always nice to see him, but the set was understated and the crowd not very considerate... never mind eh?

Coming up, we have a great week in prospect, but firstly what happened last week? Well one gig, which was The Longcut on Tuesday at Club K2. The crowd was well up for it and it was a buzzin night, plus good supportin from Day for Airstrikes and Polytechnic. Top new musicage!

Tonight is a special night. New Order return to Manchester after a two-year absence, sharing the same roof with A Certain Ratio for the first time since 1988. Tonight has potential to be the greatest night of all time... but we will see! This Friday, Mr Fran will be at Club Voltage for a bit Barney dancin an beers. On Sunday, the superb British Sea Power are at the Ritz! BSP and New Order are in close contest for 'Mr Fran's Band of the Year' so a great performance will be essential...

For you listening pleasure this week, I insist you buy Single of the Week, Girls Aloud with 'Biology'- its brilliante. Album of the Week is going to go (belatedly) to Viva Stereo with their second album 'Patterns of Behaviour'. …

    • Keeping It Local

      7 nov 2005, 15:09 av Mr_Fran

Fully rested and raring to go once more, Mr Fran enters the month of November! No gigging action last week, so nothing to report, but this week I'm back on the scene, going to The Longcut at K2 tomorrow night. Mini-freakout anyone? It'll be an interesting night methinks, especially with support from local lads Polytechnic and, I think, Day for Airstrikes. Reports on that next week!

If you're in the area and looking for something to do, then High Voltage have got two (yes, two) nights on this week - Wednesday, to celebrate the release of the new 'Power Overload' compilation (this week's, Album of the Week) and The Whip will be playing. Thursday night is as normal, which of course means quality bands and great DJs.

With Album of the Week plugged, Mr Fran's Single of the Week goes to modern-legend Guy Garvey's boys, Elbow, for 'Leaders of the Free World'. Another great song, with a terrific video - the b-sides will be worth your pennies also.
