Another fantastic year of listening is in the books. Selected from about 200 new albums I heard, these are 20 of my favorite. Lots of terrific records fell by the wayside - but I think this represents my most diverse group yet. Happy listening, and feel free to comment and argue.
- II; The German trio Moderat beat out fantastic and thoroughly engaging releases from Bonobo, Oneothrix Point Never, Jon Hopkins, and Tim Hecker as my favorite pure electronic release of the year. Though faster than most of the electronic music I’m drawn to, II exhibits both consistent, forward thinking, patient artistry and addictive, dance floor-ready cuts. Repeated listens unearth a dark undertone to each track, regardless of the BPM. The fog that develops around II is owed to its instrumental tracks, making the tension released in the pop centric vocal-lead cuts all the more gratifying.
