meh...I won't get into the discussion about pop versions of Phil from one decade to another. For me it's simply the fact that I really prefer Brand X's instrumentals. This tune just had a kind of cheesy sound to it.

I wouldn't even qualify it that way. Collins was absolutely a force of nature from '76 to '81. The variety, quantity, and quality of his output. As for this song --Collin's pop sensibilities were dead on and balanced by interesting musicianship. Too often, people view the early Collins vocal stuff in light of the cringeworthy efforts he would often make from --insert your personal cutoff date --onward. Still, some simply can't get the man from "Susudio" out of their head to listen with an open mind, or they can't make a distinction between good pop music and bad pop music. Listening for comparisons, this song bears praiseworthy similarities to Jeff Beck, Utopia, Stanley Clarke, even Steely Dan, and let's not forget the Bee Gees. Reminds me a little of the Tubes, too, only better. Wonderful song.

I rather like this poppier version of Brand X - maybe they were a bit more interesting than Genesis were at that time. Discuss.
