C’est accompagné de Timothy Leary, le prophète du LSD, promoteur des « désinhibiteurs d’esprit » et de l’ouverture des consciences humaines, que Seven Up, disque allumé s’il en est, fut dirigé et conçu. Réfugié en Suisse, poursuivi par la CIA, on peut se demander quelles étaient franchement les chances pour qu’il enregistre un disque avec la troupe allemande des Ash Ra Tempel, sinon par le truchement de cet opportuniste et illuminé qu’était Rolf Ulrich-Kaiser, le patron des labels Cosmic Couriers et Ohr Records. Au début des années 70, Ash Ra Tempel était cette formation à géométrie variable tournant autour de Manuel Göttshing, qui avait accueilli le temps d’un album le transfuge de Tangerine Dream, Klaus Shulze. Ash Ra Tempel s’était fixé comme d’ordre d’emmener le protometal de détroit au-delà, de pousser le free rock dans ses derniers retranchements, jusqu’à son aboutissement…

Il krautrock (anche detto Kosmische Musik o corrieri cosmici) è un termine coniato dalla stampa e critica angloamericana in riferimento alla scena musicale costituita dai gruppi attivi in Germania negli anni settanta che hanno prodotto in varia misura forme musicali nuove a partire dal rock progressivo o dalla musica elettronica tedesca dei decenni precedenti. Il termine fu utilizzato per la prima volta in senso denigratorio sulle pagine del settimanale inglese Melody Maker.
