I must have left my house at eight because I always do
My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due
I must have read the morning paper going into town
And having gotten through The Editorial, no doubt I must have frowned

I really think that ABBA saved the best for last.

I always come back for this song, over and over again. Definitely best ABBA song. Have so much feelings for it.

Hmm one can construe an underlying tenor of menace to the lyrics........... or one of romance. Ambivalence rules here, one feels, and 'keinenglisch', below, is right, I feel, to suppose Abba were moving into even more complex, and interesting songs and music.

I really like that theory about "you" being the narrator's murderer.

I find this song fascinating. I'd love to know who/what Bjorn had in mind as the "you" when he penned the lyrics. One theory I've read is that the song is told through the eyes of a ghost reflecting on her last day of life, the "you" being her murderer. It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that it's a love song with the singer reliving the final humdrum day before the arrival of a life-changing romance, but I hear no hint of hope in either the lyrics or the production. I can't help feeling that whatever "you" was, it wasn't very nice. It's a shame ABBA finished with The Visitors and the 1982 singles: they were starting to move beyond just making amazing music into making interesting music (there's a difference). The Visitors (song), Soldiers, I Let The Music Speak, Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, The Day Before You Came and Cassandra stand out.

That's FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was the very, very last recording ABBA ever did as a band. Although "Under attack" was released after "The day befor you came", it was recorded some time before.

Hmm, well... it was uncool, very very uncool to like ABBA as a boy then. It was... But this is such a great song, I love it, I always will

I became a bit Abba'd out a few years ago, but this is by far my favourite of their songs. It's quite disturbing, the description of a mundane life before 'you' came. Who is 'you'? It's never stated that it was a sudden head-over-heels rush of a new lover, it coiuld equally be someone's life flashing before there eyes at the onset of an extremely traumatic event, or it could, given the uncertain nature of the recollections, be about something like extreme depression...

love this song...........A love song without mentioning the word "LOVE" who else can write better lyrics than this now a days......Honest and real all this coming from band that were always "out of the ordinary" how did they do it.

I don't know why but I think Lady GaGa could cover that song.

Love the lyrics (and the song) Great way of describing the mundane. My favorite bit: "And stopped along the way to buy some chinese food to go I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on tv There's not, I think, a single episode of dallas that I didn't see "

There's something so unnerving about the lyrics and the cold synths.
