Alexi Murdoch's popularity has been growing exponentially as of late, with his music being featured in The OC, House, Prison Break, "Ugly Betty", Ladder 49, as well as in Garden State and a trailer for the film Paradise Now. It would seem natural, then, that Murdoch - whose easy voice and lithe guitar-work that reminds many other signer-songwriters rocketed into the limelight by "the machine" - would relish the triumvirate acclaim of fans, critics and the industry alike. But Murdoch is not like many other rising stars. From his auspicious beginnings as a darling of KCRW to a recent US tour that sold out more than half its gigs, Murdoch brought his five year reign as local hero to a close where it all began, at Hotel Cafe.

Murdoch pulled out all the stops for this his last LA performance prior to returning to his adopted hometown of Glasgow. The gig was billed as a "secret show" initially only announced via his mailing list, though publicized the day-of-show by way of a MySpace bulletin. The secret was apparently kept about as well as Banky's Barely Legal exhibition from last year, as the venue was jam-packed with fans - most all of Amazonian descent, much to my Lilliputian chagrin. Fortunately, by the time Murdoch actually took the stage, the club had cleared out a bit, allowing the vertically challenged in the audience to have a better view of Murdoch's Aloha 'Oe.

There's little from Murdoch's repertoire that didn't get played that night, from the hits to a new song which, to my knowledge, had hitherto only been recorded as an outro to a Morning Becomes Eclectic in-studio. Joining Murdoch for this bittersweet swan song were a cast of musicians, including Pedestrian members Zac Rae, Blair Scinta and Stewart Cole, as well as surprise guests Duncan Sheik and Samantha Rex (who performed two originals while Murdoch "took a powder"). All this pleased the audience to no end, especially the stark-raving glad girl whom listeners will notice, er, vocalizing inbetween songs. (If there was ever anyone I more hoped would find a recording of mine, it's her.)

Maybe it was the booze, maybe it was the stark-raver and maybe it was (gasp) the music, but this was a show that just kept getting better and better. While the first set was certainly performed competently, Murdoch really hit his stride following Sheik's interlude. All eight of those songs are outstanding, but the real stand-outs are a heart wrenching rendition of "Wait" and "Love You More" which has been elaborated on since the spartan original was recorded.

    07: Fireball
    08: O Mexico
    09: Um, Circles And Squares

Famously “born to an ex-Catholic priest and an almost-nun mother outside of Los Angeles,” Martin (Luther King Chavez) Dosh’s provenience makes for great copy, if not an entertaining answer to be questioned on Jeopardy. Evocative of µ-Ziq, Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, Dosh is nevertheless relentlessly his own man and a talented multi-instrumentalist … the night of this show orchestrating drums, a xylophone, a Fender Rhodes and various samplers and sequencers, practically without breaking a sweat.

Adding to this mix was the jazz stylings of the Happy Apple’s Mike Lewis. Hailing from Minneapolis, Lewis’ saxophone is prominently featured (along with “Whistling” Andrew Bird’s violin) on Dosh’s most recent full-length album, The Lost Take (which fared quite well on Pitchfork). Live, the duo vibed like peas-in-a-pod, their crowning achievement being “Um, Circles and Squares” (version from the incredible new Triple Rock EP). Featuring a plodding 4/4 beat, the tune’s marching orders are bookeneded by an infections sine-wave “blip” which makes room here and there for Dosh’s xylophone and Lewis’ sax. It’s hard to imagine how this song could have been rendered better, even if Dosh’s Rhodes hadn’t crapped out just prior to its performance.

Neck-in-neck for top honors of the evening is “A Ghost’s Business,” which gloriously spotlights the ill-fated Rhodes. Like an all-instrumental version of Peter Gabriel’s “San Jacinto” mashed with Mamadou Diabate’s “Dagna,” it’s the kind of melody equally at home in a movie soundtrack or in a newborn’s mobile. Whereas Dosh’s ghost seem to get right down to his business in this song, other tunes, like “The Lost Take” and “O Mexico” can be a third of the way through before even finding their groove. Just the same, the joy of these songs is as much in their journey as it is their destination.

A final note should be made of the cameo by Anticon co-founder James Brandon Best, aka Pedestrian. MCing an uber-minimalist version of his “O Silent Bed,” Best dedicated the song to recently deceased author, Molly Ivins. It’s completely unlike the track’s studio version – and perhaps fits less well into one’s ear – but it’s hard not to respect the veritable antidisestablishmentarianism of label and labelmates, both in terms of what and whom each represents.

(Yes, it’s the longest word I know, too. And no, I didn’t use it properly.)

    Currently on tour:

  • Intern needed!

    24 aug 2006, 19:35 av EenieMeenie

Hi there, we are looking for a part time intern to come in a couple times a week, to work specifically on chatting about bands in online forums and/or establishing and maintaining good relationships with music bloggers. Knowledge of indie pop & rock are a MUST.

We would also need you to make some retail calls occasionally, so you should also be personable. This is an unpaid internship, I'm afraid, so you would have to be into it to gain experience! We work at a small, casual office in West Hollywood.

    Please contact media@eeniemeenie.com. Thanks!

  • Maxxfemm - Weak Condition

    10 apr 2006, 02:43 av peymonmaskan

Layton's danced down side project. Paul Layton is writer producer, his sister Laura sings.

These guys could be BIG - the way Phoenix retro'd you out so nicely, Maxxfemm evokes Blondie, Olivia Newton John and even The Postal Service in that it's great pop music with no pop strings attached.

After being featured on Myspace's featured music section they scored over 110,000 listens in a week.

    They are unsigned.
