'I Know It's Over' by the Trashcan Sinatras, from The Smiths Is Dead album.

  • There is a covers album called "Romantic & Square Is Hip & Aware". The Lucksmiths track listed above is on it.

Much as I love the originals, it's a great album.

A group called The Ukrainians, featuring Peter Solowka formerly of The Wedding Present, released an EP of Smiths cover versions performed in the style of Ukrainian folk music. Even the lyrics were translated. It was called Pisni Iz the Smiths.

    Tracklisting:
    Batyar (Bigmouth Strikes Again)
Koroleva Ne Polerma (The Queen Is Dead)
    M'Yaso-Ubivstvo (Meat Is Murder)
Spivaye Solovey (What Difference Does It Make)

Spivaye Solovey is my favourite, it is just mental at the end. But all of them are very well arranged cover versions. You start off singing along in English, but then you find yourself singing along in Ukrainian after a while!

I believe Muse did a cover of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. And The Ghost Mice did one of There is a Light That Never Goes Out. However, I don't really think either of these are that great, especially the Ghost Mice one.

Paradise Lost did a cover of How Soon Is Now?? really?? I had no idea!

Some of the covers from your list don't count because they are covers of Morrissey solo. Sandie Shaw doesn't rreally count for the opposite reason, it's The Smiths with Sandie Shaw on vocals.

Saint Etienne did a really good live cover of Hand In Glove. I could send it (or yousendit) if you want.

Sinead O'Connor did a cover of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.

Someone mentioned hardcore covers, you have to hear the cover of Shoplifters of The World Unite by a band called Dare To Defy (they're hardcore or oi!punk, I don't know), it sounds just like it was always a hardcore punk song ;-)

And I have to say I love the Ukrainians covers :)

  • Psychadelic Furs - How Soon Is Now very good cover version that actually comes close to doing it justice.

Ocean Blue - There Is A Light... great live version from thier sought after Peace and Light EP

Sianspheric - Please, Please, Please... spacious shoegazey version hidden track wedged between track 6 and 7 of thier Sound of The Colour of the Sun album. Might be able to get it if you download the song Radiodiffusion... that's if you can find anything by them at all.

Actually saw Saint Etienne do Hand In Glove in Toronto and got Sarah Cracknell's vocal sheet that was taped to the stage beside the set list...
