Wrong, most of the inhabitants are not ethnically Chinese, they are mixed-blood. According to the vocal of Chthonic, around 3/4 of the Taiwanese population (excluding the people who came in 1949 under Chiang Kai-shek) are not pure Chinese. Of course their modern culture is mostly shaped by the Chinese culture and they do speak Chinese accents, but they still have many ancient Taiwanese traditions and beliefs. Around 3% of the population are still 100% Taiwanese and speak a Taiwanese language (Atayal, Thao, Seediq, Paiwan, Amis etc.), but I'm sure this is nothing new to u as well ;)

And also, I do have Taiwanese friends myself and don't have to rely on a metal band's point of view. :)

@catlitta392, I understand your point, but you still can't say that "The Republic of China" does not exist. It is not a "vision" or a "dream" because it just happens to be official name of Taiwan. Of course, Taiwan belongs to the people of Taiwan, who can be called Taiwanese. I have not at any point called Taiwan a territory of (P.R.) China. I'm only saying that it is a part of the Chinese cultural heritage, with most of the inhabitants being ethnically Chinese and speaking Chinese language (either Mandarin or some other Chinese dialect like Hokkien). It's all about definition. My interest in Chinese culture and language is not political and thus not restricted to mainland China.

The Republic of China is not existing, it's a vision and dream of some stubborn Chinese idiots who try to rule Taiwan. I recommend you to read and understand the lyrics of interviews of the Taiwanese Metal band Chthonic, then I'm sure you will find out the truth and stop posting this kind of nonsense "Taiwan = Republic of China" ...

Taiwan is just occupied by Repuclic of China. Taiwan is NOT Republic of China. Taiwan is Taiwan! Every Taiwanese would agree with me in this point. The KMT is a foreign party ruling a country which is not their own, because they were thrown out of their country thanks to the Chinese communists. Taiwan is Taiwan and belongs to the people which are Taiwanese, no matter if they are pure Taiwanese, mixed-Taiwanese/Chinese or Chineses who settled there many years ago. Yes, the people with Chinese descent keep their traditions and mix them with the Taiwanese traditions, but you don't have the right to call them Chinese against their will nor calling Taiwan a territory of CHINA !!! That's like calling the USA or Australia a part of Britain or Austria a part of Germany, because most of the people living there are British/German descent/root. Austrians are de-facto German, but nobody would call Austria a 2nd Germany, even if it was "a political part" of Germany during WW2.

China = People's Republic of China. Taiwan = Republic of China. So, technically speaking, Taiwan indeed is China, as much as China is China. But Taiwan is not (a part of) the People's Republic of China. 98% of the population of Taiwan is Han Chinese. And they speak Chinese (Mandarin/Minnan). And in some ways, they have preserved Chinese culture better than in the mainland, not having suffered the effect of for example the cultural revolution. Taking all this into considereation, it shouldn't be completely wrong to say that a band from Taiwan is Chinese - given, that you know the difference between PRC and ROC, which indeed are two different things. I'm not taking a political stand of any kind, I'm just pointing out that saying "Taiwan has not much to do with China" is also not completely correct.

@lock2stock, If Taiwan belongs to China, then half China belongs to Japan, including Manchuria, Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai. If you claim on old historic facts, you are a not more than a goddamn bai chi. I am not even chinese, but seems I know more about this political issue than you. If you are blinded by a corrupt government and their media, it's not my fault, shame on you, the whole world, including Taiwan, half China and also Hong Kong knows the truth. No offense to China, I love China, I love chinese music, but Taiwan has not much to do with China, if you don't believe me, then go reading and find out the truth. And no, what the chinese government is telling you in their fake textbooks, is not the truth. This is what my chinese friends taught me. ;)

@evebanger666 Wow, you're sure stiingy with rap/hip-hop >_> considering that the music scene in China doesn't get much coverage, it's interesting to know about how other genres are doing along with rock/metal.
