    Connect the Artists!!!!

I've been slapping connected artists on left and right, but who do you think should make the cut? Every member please recommend 5 obscure artists to be connected. Under 50,000 listeners and full tracks on last.fm is a big plus.

(we've reached our max of artists, but feel free to continue making recommendations)

Classical > Charles-Valentin Alkan . Piano music composer, very powerful and technically too difficult. The difficulty of his work is part of the reason why he is not very popular. But he is one of my favorites musicians overall.

Hip Hop > K'naan. Hip hopper from Somalia. He is not into ganster culture, but even against it. His lyrics talk about peace, despite his difficult life, thats not usual in hip hop. His african style makes him sound different.

New Age > Sina Vodjani. Very spiritual music, inspired mainly in buddhism.

World/Folk > Malouma. Music from Mauritania. Mainly acoustic, with a unique sound.

    More coming later.. :P

  • My Recs

Some of these I wouldn't consider obscure, but I all of them are bands I didn't learn about until this year. In no particular order:

Carfax Abbey Darkwave / Gothic / Industrial
    Tom Fox Neo-Soul
Voltaire Gothic Folk / Dark Cabaret
    Lunascape Trip-Hop
    Get Set Go Indie Rock

  • Wow, hard to narrow it down to just five, but here are my picks:

1.Atlas Sound - solo project of the guy from Deerhunter, noise washed atmospheric indie pop
2.Cassettes Won’t Listen - for some reason I can't code this?? Anyway, indie pop over triphoppy beats. Currently getting massive airplay at my house.
3.Odd Nosdam - anticon goodness, yum
4.Vic Chestnutt - this is the kind of alt-country I can appreciate
    5.Wooden Shjips - psychedelic rock

I saw them at the Spitz, HQ Club, that was legendary...

A few extra wouldn't hurt. I just didn't want 24 people to list 20 artists.

OMG Extremely recommendable: The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble plain beautiful!

  • A few extra wouldn't hurt. I just didn't want 24 people to list 20 artists.
In that case, here are a few more:
Handsome Furs – Not really that obscure since they are part of the whole Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown crowd, but this is the only one I like.
    Chromatics – atmospheric synth pop
SJ Esau – Another Anticon guy.
Archie Bronson Outfit – bluesy rock
The Chap – witty experimental pop, check out their album Mega Breakfast

I saw them at the Spitz, HQ Club, that was legendary...

    Wild Sweet Orange
    Patrick Porter
Sunny Intervals You must listen to 'About your lost car keys' for a laugh.

    Indie Folk:
    Simon Finn
    Sunforest

    Hmmm... a few more than 5. : )

@Coldclock - Home has a concept album about sex? How funny.

@dunkelengel - I'm falling in love with The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Great recommendation.

    @poppyrocky - The Chap? Remember, no self-promotion. :P

@Morris - I can't connect Maurizio B for the above reason (poppy is not really a member of The Chap, I was just joking with her.)

  • @dai77- lol

I saw them at the Spitz, HQ Club, that was legendary...
  • @dai77:
yeah that a great album and not overly dirty. Holler it you wanna check it.

  • I'm trying to keep it to where there are full tracks, but The Cave Singers are too good to pass up.

    Let's try:

Pierre Guimard - (friend of Ben Kweller's, French pop)
    Au - (electronic folk experimental)
The Cave Singers (dark twee folk)
    Gemma Ray (50s noir)
    Little Wings (lo-fi)

I like what I've gotten so far.

  • @dudemonkey - I second the vote on Au, am really loving the album Verbs.

    Agreed!! I really like Au.

Port O'Brien is one of my favorite bands. I didn't realize they had so few listeners but there are full tracks available. 'I Woke Up Today' is a great song especially live.
