Ehm, I think this topic is a little mess...The starter of the topic should better define what he means with 'classic'...Shakespeare together with Agatha Christie?? :/

    Anyway, here's my choice:
Ludovico Ariosto - L'Orlando Furioso _ Ancient classic
Umberto Eco - The name of the Rose _Modern classic

  • candide or optimism Voltaire

  • The Picture of Dorian Grey
    The Scarlet letter
    Jane Eyre

Reflections In The Liquid Windswept Mirror
The Breathless World Elegance And Charm
    -The Sisters Of Mercy-
  • Edgar Allan Poe - The Raven

  • Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita.
Twentieth century but a classic nonetheless.

2 famous books by Lewis Carroll: "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" and "Through thee looking glass".
Also stories by E.A.Poe (I have yet to read some Lovecraft)
The only novel by Oscar Wilde - "The Portrait Of Dorian Gray"
"Crime and Punishment" by F. Dostoevsky
Propably the most beautifully crafted love story of all time: "the Great Gatsby" by F.Scott Fitzgerald.
And the archetype of all vampire novels = "Dracula" by Bram Stoker ! Forget Twilight. This is the real deal.

East of Eden - John Steinback
    or
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

I can not read anything much older than those, 19th century and older literature makes me cringe because of the styling, as does certain types of modernism lit. Don't even get me started on Russian lit. I'm just very picky with classics but prefer the more modern ones if I must read them.

For now "Faust" and "Crime and Punishement", I think. But I feel that this is the time when I'm able to read more classics and I'm going to do this, on my list there is eg Orwell, Dostoyewsky, Hemingway, Hugo, Tolstoy...

    William Shakespeare - Macbeth

  • Though I read modern literature too, I still like the classics. My favorites are:
    Thomas Mann - Buddenbrooks
E.T.A. Hoffmann - Lebensansichten des Katers Murr
Geoffrey Chaucer - The Canterbury Tales
J.W. von Goethe - Italienische Reise
    George Sand - Nanon
    Jean Paul - Siebenkäs

And on the 8th day, God created the Blues.
  • 'The Count of Monte Cristo' would be one. And then probably 'To Kill a Mockingbird'... I re-read those up to a point where I could recite whole chapters from both...
