Yes here is another update on my album list! Ive bought some great releases ofcourse.(You weren't doubting my taste were you?)

Anyway the new purchases since the last time:

First: Atheist - Unquestionable presence
<img src="http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s33961.jpg"; alt="Atheist - Unquestionable Presence">

Yeah finally got this very important release. Atheist is one of the most unique and best metal bands ever. They managed to be progressive and technical without having soulless songs. This album is the last album with the incredible bass player Roger Patterson. Despite that the album following this one is better overall it can't touch this album bass wise. A album i think everyone in metal should have for sure.

Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis

This is possibly the last Decapitated album and its imho their best. Most of theire other tracks had great intro's but get more boring futher allong the song. This album however does not have that issue for me. I really hope that this isnt the last album by Decapitated but i dont know now with witek gone. RIP Witek

entombed - uprising

One of the great Death'n Roll Albums made by Entombed. There is not realy allot to say about this album except that it is another showcase of awesome death'n roll.

Entombed - Morning Star

Yes i bought 2 Entombed albums in this period. I just saw them both lying there in the store for 8 euros each. Anyway: this album is also a showcase of excellent Death'n roll. Different ofcourse from uprising but still awesome.

Melechesh - Emissaries

This band is quite unique. Melechesh is basically a thrashy middle eastern folk black metal band. What does that sound like? Black metal with allot of middle eastern music influences. They call themselves sumerian metal iirc and i would call them that if they strayed a bit more from the black metal path into a more folky path. That is right guys this is the closest we get to middle eastern viking metal. A genre i long wish to hear but isnt here. So is this album good? Hell yes. Get it now.

• 2007 and metal.

31 dec 2007, 22:00 av tomcatha

2007 was a good year for me metal wise. I greatly expanded my collection both download wise and actual cd wise.

Ive been to just 2 concerts because of lack of money or time but both were quite good. I went to the Arnhem Metal Meeting and Melechesh. If you want to know more about them just read the reviews i posted earlier here on last.fm

Now onto my fave albums list of 2007.

Neurosis - Given to the Rising
neurosis shows once again what athmospheric sludge doom is all about.

Reverend Bizarre - III: So Long Suckers
This album is possibly the best classical doom album(think black sabbath) ever.

Moonsorrow - V: Hävitetty
Arguably the best viking metal album ever. The folk is implemented greatly, it is incredibly epic and it rocks \m/

Runners up:

Amorphis - Silent Waters
Amorphis mixes elegy with eclipse. Which turns out to be a great mix. Excellent progressive metal with hints of doomdeath. Not as good as elegy though.

Slough Feg - Hardwolder
Epic power metal like manilla road or brocas helm. No this isnt filled with cheese this isnt hammerfall. Shows that epic power metal is far from dead.

Otargos - Kinetic Zero.
This is the only pure black metal band i really enjoy. Great band with very unusual lyrics about quantum physics.

Mithras - Behind the Shadows..... lie madness

experimental brutal death metal best fits this album. Originally done but suffers from poor production.

Dissapointment of the year:

Airut - Langennut.

Oh i was waiting for theire first lp. Theire ep's all have been great and had great originallity the lp changed the songs carried from the ep's into less original and the production didnt sound as good either. It wasnt quality but the original versions just had this nice sound. Anyway they sound more like children of bodom and such now with this release which is really not a good thing.

Albums i havent listened enough to yet to make a judgement:

Down - Over the Under.
Really enjoyed the previous 2 albums. Original southern doom metal and this album seems to be good too.

Ulver - Shadows of the Sun. A incredible band that used to be black metal but changed and kept on changing. This album is eh. I heared it most closely resembles chamber music. Whatever that may be. Only listened a bit to it and it sounded awesome already.

Obituary - Xecutioner's return
I heared that this classic floridan death metal band really made a good album with this. I dont know yet. So far what i have gotten sounds wierd but i bet that is because i got a prerelease promo. Anyway only listened 2 or 3 songs yet of this but seems that obituary still rules however.

Viikate - Marraskuun Lauluja 1
Another album by one of my favourite finnish bands. You could best describe this band as melancholic melodic metal. Great band with great albums. This album seems to be great too but not entirely listened to it yet.

That would be it.

oh and for the future in 2008. I dont know really.

I know a new manilla road is coming but other than that i dont know. I shall just let 2008 happen and see what happens.

Megadeth - So Far So Good So What!

There are more albums i want to get but as i dont have that much money i can only buy about 2 a month. So i tend to think a long time about purchases before actually making one.

Albums i want to get but are impossible to find due to either out of stock or just not being sold in the netherlands:

Gorguts - Obscura
Viikate - any
Airut - Any
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfris

As you can see my album list is fairly varied. I know it isnt a large collection but i need more income for a faster expanding collection. I have been buying albums since 2005 and got into metal late 2004.

• Peace Aged?

21 okt 2007, 22:04 av tomcatha

Peace Sells is one of the most important thrash albums of all time. This album changed Thrash metal and even other metal genres. Many bands consider Megadeth to be one of their prime influences. However is it still an album that every metalhead should have? Are you better off listening to newer Thrash albums despite the increased quality of the new remixed and remastered version?

I don't think so. While some songs are a bit bland at times, it still has a couple of the best Thrash songs there are out there. Everything sounds a bit predictable in parts though but there are newer Thrash albums that sound quite a bit more predictable.

The production does have it's flaws. The guitars have some unwanted distortion when playing higher notes and sometimes the album sounds like it has been recorded in a basement. Not that it feels like you are with them in the basement. Instead you hear just the negative side of being in the same basement as the band. The vocals are the best example of this. The guitars however are always at least above average. Black Friday even has some of the best riffs of any metal song I know and it's not the only song with impressive guitar work. Bad Omen, Peace Sells, My Last Words and Devils Island all have very good guitarmanship. The bass is a bit mixed bag however. There is the legendary opening of Peace Sells, a bit bland bass on the I Ain't Superstitious cover to the very nice bass again in the last song My Last Words. The vocals have always been the most critized part of Megadeth. Some people can't either stand the vocals at all while others think it isn't great but it fits well. I am one of the last group. The vocals on this album are never superb but they just fit pretty damn well. The production helps at times with this but also sometimes makes the vocals sound a bit worse. The drums are the weakest part of the album. Granted metal drumming in the 80's wasn't impressive most of the time and with Peace Sells it's the same story. The drums are average compared to the other Thrash bands of that era. However if you listen to the songs as a whole you will hear that everything does fit together very well. Sometimes the instruments really enhance each other like in My Last Words.

What does this all make Peace Sells for the newer metal fan? Well, that it is still a very solid release that has aged well. It isn't an album with very complex song structures or just super riffs and solos but that doesn't matter because it sounds very well this way. Peace Sells is still an album every newer metalhead should get and as it looks now it will continue to be an essential must have album forever. It may not an album that leaves you in awe after you listen to it but you will never get tired of it. I'm giving it 85%.

• My Top 10 Artists 27-5 - 3/6 2007

5 jun 2007, 12:49 av mozes_kriebel

1. Finntroll (69 plays). I have loved this band for quite some time now. I used to be crazy about their album 'Nattfödd'. I still love that one, but I've recently discovered an even better album: 'Jaktens Tid'. I gave this albums quite some listens this week, thats why its so high on this list.

2. Agathodaimon (56 plays) is together with Finntroll probably my favourite artist at the moment. There albums are in very good balance, quite some melodic black and then sometimes a soft song with female vocal in between. Perfect albums, especially 'Sepent's Embrace' and 'Chapter III'.

3. Carpathian Forest (46 plays). Is also a very impressive melodic black metal band. A little more brutal then Agathodaimon, but also very very nice. There album 'Fuck you all' was a dissapointment to me when I recently downloaded it, but 'Strange Old Brew' is fantastic.

4. Equilibrium (35 plays). Very nice folk metal from Germany, after Finntroll the best folk stuff I know atm. Just as with Agathodaimon, their albums are very well balanced with some soft parts in it, what makes the happy, fast tracks even better somehow.

5. Deathspell Omega (35 plays). For me the best black metal-band I know. I only have one of their albums ( Kénôse), which only contains 3 tracks, and still this many listens;). If anyone can recommend me another great album of theirs, please let me know:).

6. Naglfar (31 plays). Weird for this quite well-known band, but I've only recently discovered this one. Also nice melodic black metal, not as good as Agathodaimon or Carpathian Forest, but also nice to listen to.

7. Kvist (26 plays). Recently recommended black metal. Gave it some listens to see how I feel about them, and its nice, but probably won't become one of my favourites. But who knows:)

8. Mors Principium Est (25 plays). I know this band for quite some time. But I never really loved them. I thought they were okay, but that was it. But a few weeks ago I kind of re-discovered them, and I see now its very very good melodic death metal. I especially love their album 'The Unborn'.

9. Carcass (24 listens). I know this one for quite some time now, but I can't stop loving their music. The lyrics are a little.. euhmmm 'extreme' sometimes, but the music is fantastic. Especially their album 'Heartwork' is amazing, can't stop listening it.

10. Behemoth (22 plays). I'm actually surprised that this one made it so high in my charts this week. Someone recently uploaded one of their albums, and I checked it out to see if I liked it. As I gave this album 2 listens, they are in my top10;). I love their drumming, but the combination of black metal-music and death metal-vocal does not really do it for me. Its okay, but not brilliant.

It looks like I'm starting to develop a taste towards black metal at the moment. Some months ago 8 out of 10 bands would have been death metal. Now only Mors Principium Est and Carcass are death, the others are folk/black, black or melodic black. I'm curious how this will be some tome from know. Will my taste develop further towards black, or will I go back to some more balance between death and black. Time will show I guess:)

Sun 20 May – Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, Skinless, War from a Harlots Mouth @ Baroeg, Rotterdam

This was a fucking great show. It started with the mediocre War from a Harlots Mouth, but after that only quality bands played.

Cattle Decapitation had a nice show, but it was mainly the singer who impressed me. He had a great vocal range, from insanely high-pitched screams to deep, low roars. Very good.

Then Skinless came, and they got the crowd a-moving. Even though it's a small venue, Skinless managed to create a wall of death. Twice. There was also some crowd surfing and the usual pitting, but their show was insane.

After the insane Skinless, Dying Fetus disappointed me. They played tight, they played well, but it wasn't as impressive as the show Skinless pulled off. I loved their show, and they played almost everything I wanted to hear, but they weren't as energetic as Skinless.

Great show, nonetheless.

The only two near-decent pictures I could take. Fuck my cellphone.

It's Skinless' guitarist, if you're wondering.

This is Dying Fetus' guitarist.
