What Remake/Cover That Was Better Than The Original?

  • What Remake/Cover That Was Better Than The Original?

I was having this discussion with some friends. I would like to hear what others have to say.

Here are some of the remakes/covers that I think are better than the original:

Luther Vandross: A House Is Not A Home (Dionne Warwick)
Luther Vandross: Since I Lost My Baby (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
Luther Vandross: When I Need You (Leo Sayer)
Luther Vandross: Love Won't Let Me Wait (Major Harris)
Luther Vandross: If Only For One Night (Brenda Russell)
Club Nouveau: Lean On Me (Bill Withers)
The Cover Girls: Wishing On A Star (Rose Royce)
Stephanie Mills: Feel The Fire (Peabo Bryson)
Earth, Wind & Fire: Got To Get You Into My Life (The Beattles)
En Vogue: Giving Him Something He Can Feel (Aretha Franklin)
The Isley Brothers: Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight (James Taylor)
The Isley Brothers: Summer Breeze (Seals & Crofts)
Ike and Tina Turner: Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles: Abraham, Martin & John (Dion)

Here are some that are too close to call:

Whitney Houston: I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan)
The Fugees: Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack)

  • Seals and Crofts's "Summer Beeze" covered by Type O Negative

  • I don't compare covers with original versions because they are usually too different to even be compared.

  • Unpopular opinion:
I prefer blink-182's cover of "Dancing with Myself" rather than the original by Billy Idol.

  • Machine Head's cover of 'Message in a Bottle'

I know a lot of 'em, also since you have lots of artists on youtube who cover songs that couldn't be worse anyway. Sam Tsui's 'Just a Dream'(originally Nelly) is a good one, as well as lots of covers by Tyler Ward, for example 'Break your Heart'(originally Taio Cruz) and 'Sattelite'(originally Lena Meyer-Landrut) aren't bad.

Other 'realer' covers that I like are for example
-John Mayers cover of Bold as Love(originally Hendrix ofcourse),
-Milows cover of Ayo Technology(originally JT&50Cent),
-Lisa Lois cover of Hallelujah(originally Jeff Buckley)
-Laura Jansens cover of Use Somebody(originally Kings of Leon)
-Plain White T's cover of Livin' on a Prayer(Originally Bon Jovi)
-Tom Dice cover of Bleeding Love(originally Leona Lewis)
-The Baseballs cover of Hot'nCold(originally krapy pervert)

Ofcourse you got lots of different covers, but these are a few of my favourites.

  • Jimi Hendrix Experience's version of All Along the Watchtower springs to mind.

  • And also Scissor Sister's version of Comfortably Numb.

Ryan Adams' version of Wonderwall is far superior to the original version. A much more attractive arrangement.

  • Muse's cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off You, originally by Frankie Vallie

  • I didn't do any live ones, but I do love Bon Jovi's cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World".

Also here's another I left off my original list:

    The New Birth: Wildflower (Skylark).

The White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
First Aid Kit - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Fleet Foxes)
Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole (Leadbelly)
Yngwie Malmsteen - Mr Crowley (Ozzy Osbourne)

I'll prob add more at a later date!

Metallica - Whiskey In A Jar (Thin Lizzy)
Metallica - Turn The Page (Bob Seger)
Anberlin - Love Song (The Cure)
    Pillar - Shine (Collective Soul)
We Came As Romans - My Love (Justin Timberlake)

are a few that come to mind

  • I think this could well be my favourite cover version of all time.

Here's the original gangsta rap classic "Straight Outta Compton" by NWA....

....and this is Nina Gordon's acoustic ballad version.

First thing that springs to mind:

Also as someone mentioned before, Disturbed - Land of Confusion. Furthermore, I prefer Korn's version of One over Metallica. Yup, I've said that.

Change is coming through my shadow. My shadow's shedding skin, I've been picking my scabs again.
