All Tomorrow’s Parties, Curated by Animal Collective
13th-15th May 2011 at Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead
On Sale Now from

We are very pleased to invite one of the most exciting indie success stories of the last decade to curate the only ATP festival weekend of May 2011. Animal Collective’s last album Merriweather Post Pavilion was hailed with universal acclaim; 5 Stars from Uncut, 8/10 from NME and a 9.6 from Pitchfork, who also named it their album of the year and put it in their top 20 albums of the decade. ATP promoter Barry Hogan: ”I always wondered what kind of mixtape Animal Collective would put together, so we are really stoked that they are climbing into the curating hot seat at Butlins next May where they will headline and curate the festival that includes the likes of Lee Scratch Perry and Gang Gang Dance from an already eclectic mix of 40+ acts.”

Wasn't trying to impress. At least, not in the sense you use the word in. Just trying to help you think about art in a more expansive way than knee-jerk dismissing arguments and opinions to try to appear as if you occupy a higher plane than them. I failed. Never mind, and I'm sorry if you didn't get what you wanted in clearing. The most impressive thing, surely, is that you've got a tumblr where you call yrself not only a 'Film Handler', but also a 'Promoter' and even a 'Muso'!. Really puts my achievements into context.

@ dejaser 'I don't need to see them play it all again and neither should anyone else' is possibly the most pathetic attempt at an argument I've ever seen. You seem to be principally missing the point of the argument I started on this thread a week ago. Animal Collective were paid to headline a festival not shuffle up to one of their 'own' gigs. Not everybody has seen AnCo several times previously and to expect them to do so as standard is absurd. Bands like 'Gang Gang' and surprisingly 'Big Boi' seemed to understand this and the people responded accordingly. You engage the audience get them or your side and ensure that people 'have a good time' not by asking them to appreciate your 'new material' which they will not hear again until months later on their head phones at home. Is an almost entirely static crowd of people waiting to hear something they 'recognise' a good time? The same set, the same order both nights. Is the sound of a band that cares not for its audience.

@ dejaser 'I don't need to see them play it all again and neither should anyone else' What a monolithically inarguable opinion. I think you are totally correct. Furthermore, I move that any opinions which dissent from it be deemed a priori invalid and tantamount to libel. Cultural homogenization comes from some unexpected places, doesn't it...

@ Cingus True enough, I saw AC play almost exclusively MPP stuff two years ago. I don't need to see them play it all again and neither should anyone else. My review of Sunday is here:

@FireSermon After every album they release, they tour the album, which is what they did with MPP. The MPP tour is now over so they're touring new stuff, just like they toured MPP stuff after they finished touring Strawberry Jam.

The new AnCo stuff sounded fucking amazing so why does anyone give a shit that they didn't play the 'hits'? They played Brother Sport which was enough for me. Really enjoyed them both nights. Gang Gang were the other highlight for me, along with OPN.

Love these shoutboxes after the event. Little discussion of the music beyond unqualified superlatives but plenty of posturing, .gif avatars and whinging; 'I know the most about band X' 'The crowd didn't meet my coolness criteria'. Regarding AnCo, I'm hardly an expert but a trip to reveals the fanboyish claim of them always playing unreleased material at concerts to be pretty false. Identical setlists at a festival you're curating is hard to defend, i.m.o.. I only saw 20 mins of them due to clashes, but the new stuff seemed really expansive; less cleanly synthetic than MPP. Brilliant weekend though, cheers to ATP for putting it on, and to the lads from Sittingbourne who gave us a 5-a-side match. @Tamahone, we were having chalet parties on the reg, but if we saw some lone ranger bowling about, mumbling about his 'dissapointment' (sic) with the crowd, we prob. wouldn't have invited him in.

I saw Tony Conrad and Jennifer Walshe, it was great. I think it's a bit of a shame not many people turned up for them of Terry Riley.

Also don't see the big deal about the people bitching. The guys are pretty approachable. I'd overheard someone mention that it was gonna be the same set, saw Geo, asked him. Nothing they can do about it. He said they hadn't anticipated doing two sets and they played everything they'd had time to figure out or practice. I thought their first set was great and didn't mind missing the second. There's always more to see at ATP. No big deal. Had an awesome weekend.

The Entrance Band made the festival no question, them and Kurt Vile. Gang Gang, EAR PWR, Beach House and Orthrelm were good too.

Yeah, I wasn't at all bothered that AnCo did new material cos it all sounded amazing but I can't help but feel like it was a bit lazy doing two identical sets. It's not like they clashed with other big pulls of the weekend so the crowd was going to be split and there'd be missed opportunities. I think if they knew they were just going to repeat the set, they could've let Gang Gang have the headline slot on Sunday cos it all felt a bit anti-climatic considering that (presumably) the majority of the crowd had already seen the AnCo set.

anyone see Tony Conrad with Jennifer Walshe on the Sunday? That was pretty out there. Those violins looked shredded by the end

My problem with AnCo is not that they played lots of new stuff, I was expecting it and enjoyed the majority of the stuff thoroughly. My problem is they thought they could get away with the same set, I was so happy with the first set and was really looking forward to hear what they would do next but it kinda left a sting in my experience. On the other hand I think I saw God during Gang Gang Dance, absolute festival highlight for me. Wow.

Black Dice, GGD, TFUL 282 and Meat Puppets were the best for me. Khaira Arby should have closed the weekend though, no idea why her set time was changed twice. Quite annoyed I had to miss a large chunk of her set. Other than that another great ATP weekend.

Those two Animal Collective sets were AMAZING, especially saturday night, and @runoutgroove is absolutely right...If any of you have seen Animal Collective before you'd know they usually play a shit ton of new stuff so i didnt get the complaining really? Gang Gang blew the fucking roof off too..lots of other highlights but bed calls! hope everyone had a great weekend :-)
