The Goethe-Institut China presents the German band TOCOTRONIC

The group Tocotronic is from Hamburg and since its founding in the 1990’s has developed into one of the most important representatives of German-language music. Their first album, “Digital ist besser” (i.e. digital is better, 1995) has long since become a classic of German pop music. Influenced by a diversity of styles, their music ranges from punk, grunge and electro to pop. For over 20 years the band has been developing a unique sound and given expression to an entire generation’s take on life through their critical lyrics. In 2010, their record “Schall und Wahn” (i.e. sound and madness) rose to Number One on the German album charts. Tocotronic’s most recent album appeared in 2013 under the title “Wie wir leben wollen” (i.e. how we want to live) – deliberately not formulated as a question by the band, but as a reminder that one can learn from art how one wishes to live. Back before, Tocotronic often stood for a rebellious negation, nowadays there are clear answers to the question, “OK, so what do we want?”

Die Hamburger Band „Tocotronic“ gehört seit ihrer Gründung in den 90er Jahren zu den wichtigsten Vertretern deutschsprachiger Musik. Ihr erstes Album „Digital ist besser“ von 1995 ist längst ein Klassiker deutscher Popmusik. Geprägt von einer Vielfalt an Stilen reichen ihre Stücke von Punk, Grunge und Elektro bis hin zur Pop- und Rockmusik. Über 20 Jahre haben sie einen ganz eigenen Sound entwickelt und mit ihren kritischen und gut durchdachten Texten dem Lebensgefühl einer ganzen Generation eine Stimme verliehen. Ihre Platte „Schall & Wahn“ stieg 2010 direkt auf Platz eins in die deutschen Albumcharts ein. Ihr aktuelles Album „Wie wir leben wollen“ (2013) haben die vier Musiker ganz bewusst nicht als Frage formuliert, sondern als Erinnerung daran, dass man von Kunst lernen kann, wie man leben will. Standen sie früher meist allein für ein rebellisches „Dagegen“, geben sie heute zusätzlich auch klare Antworten auf die Frage: Wie wollen wir es denn?
