The Make It Up Club has been committed to nurturing, presenting and promoting avant-garde improvised music and sound performance since 1998, making it one of the longest continually-running improv nights in the world. As such, we are celebrating by again kicking off the year with one grouping for each of our 16 years of existence, presenting four diverse assemblages of improvisers on each of the four tuesdays in January upstairs at Bar Open.
As ever, the festivities come in the form of some of the finest examples of spontaneous audial creators from across the vast range of the sonosphere's idioms, genres and instrumentations, including the intensely dense feedback-drenched electronics of Jean-Philippe Gross up against the densely intense percussive assault of Sean Baxter; Crys Cole and James Rushford continuing their abstract musical narrative of sublime ecstasy with the addition of Callum G'Froerer's trumpet delicacies; collector of frequencies Sally McIntyre in a first-time duo with the kindred artistically eloquent mind of Joel Stern; MIUC's favourite Aus-Swede cross-cultural collaborators Casey and Johan Moir scouting soundscapes with local textural explorers Alice Hui-Sheng Chang & Nigel Brown; some analog synthetic bliss courtesy of electrowizards Ben Vida and Mathew Watson; Yoann Durant's saxophonic shreddery and Robbie Avenaim's bass drum battery combining to undergo yet further conceptual expansion; two premier representatives of Londoner extemporaneous composition Viv Corringham & Alison Blunt for their first duo set in Melbourne; many more one-off sonic formations that will exist for a half hour never to be played the same way ever again.
