Experience the three visionary films of Godfrey Reggio and in a rare opportunity hear the musical scores performed by their legendary composer Philip Glass.

In a Melbourne premiere, Philip Glass and his Ensemble will perform live at each program creating an unforgettable film and music concert.

Reggio conceived these films over a period of 20 years using streams of raw, emotional and honest images, with no dialogue or linear narrative, to create three unique works of art and forging an entirely new form – concert cinema.

One of the defining composers of our time, Glass has reinvented the relationship between music and the moving image through working with Reggio to choreograph the music and images precisely.

Qatsi means life in the Hopi language and the trilogy is a powerful commentary on the planet we live on. Haunting and beautiful, the films explore the challenges and dangers humankind imposes on the world.

For Koyaanisqatsi they perform as The Philip Glass Ensemble under direction by Michael Riesman, Philip Glass is in the group. I know what he looks like and he played last night, whether you saw him or not.

To Riesman's right was a heavy guy with short gray hair, totally different from the thin curly haired Philip Glass we saw at the end of the show.

He was def on stage playing. Doesn't even make any sense that he'd come all the way here to wait backstage.

Sorry dude, but Philip Glass was on stage, to Riesman's right, playing a keyboard.

No, that was Michael Riesman. Glass only made an appearance at the very end during the applause, at which point everybody cheered loudly.

haha I'm not sure where you were ... but he most certainly was on stage, playing a keyboard ...

Well actually you didn't see him live since he was backstage and didn't play anything.

You know what, I got to see Philip Glass perform live and this experience has been one of the greatest in my life. I couldn't give a stuff about projection errors or 'ugly wrong notes'. Shit happens, get over it.

Well they should have make this series of concerts coincide with a restoration of the original films... The image is really noisy, it desperately needs a bluray re-release.

The projection error - the dark lines running horizontally across the screen, about a third of the way down from the top - annoyed me more than the odd musical slip up. Apart from that, I thought it was well done. Some of the vintage 80s NYC and gaming footage was gold. Kind of matched the venue.

Well I wasn't disappointed cause I've never seen the movie or heard the soundtrack before, wouldn't have known a wrong note. Sounded great to me.

Not to mention than the synths sounded really cheap live. I only applaud the singers (not the one saying "koyaanisqatsi" like only 20 times in 90 min but still managed to get one wrong) and the flutists who were great. But Riesman was really really rusty, just horrid.

I was really disappointed... Michael Riesman ruined it. More than 40 years of experience, 100 $ for the ticket, and you still get huge ugly wrong notes... Not to mention the "koyaanisqatsi" singing at the end that was butchered on one occurence... Yes it's a tricky and technical music, but if you can't play it properly every time, don't play it live for God's sake... A lot of people must be so disappointed right now...
