British singer Florence Welsh started making a mark in early 2008, her London shows carving out a place for a theatric stage set-up and glam outfits long before her music became a fixture on TV soundtracks and idents. Her revolving backing group became known as 'The Machine' after an in-joke with longtime keyboard player Isabella Summers, resulting in the most improbably name-buzz band of 2009.
Hot new artist (83°F)
Bursting out with a thump and slap, 'Kiss with a Fist' wound up being a rockier effort than her album proved. Second single 'Dog Days are Over' got Florence + The Machine enough coverage to make 'Hot in 2009' lists and, after being touted on music blogs, the track made waves on Last.fm charts. Lungs was released in July in Europe, alongside a slew of live dates and festival performances, but it was a b-side that started to get the most attention: 'Dog Days...' had featured a cover of Candi Staton's power ballad 'You've Got The Love', and it became one of your favourites within weeks.
Florence + The Machine close the year with a single release of 'You've Got The Love', and will start 2010 in Australia before a European tour in February.
